Keeping your home safe from the sun

With the UK currently basking in a tropical heatwave, it’s not just humans who need protecting from the sun – your home does too. As worktop and wall panels specialists, here are two simple ways you can care for your surfaces while the heat soars and we head outdoors:

Be good after BBQs

There’s no better way to celebrate summer than with a barbecue. But while cooking, eating and socialising outside is great, it’s your poor kitchen worktops that have to deal with the aftermath. Burger grease, relish and a whole variety of sauces can all leave stubborn residue on your surfaces – especially if left to tackle the morning after! To ensure the longevity of your worktops and prevent any staining or marks, always try to deal with this immediately.

A soapy water mix should do the trick. For hard marks - tempting as it is - avoid using abrasive scourers or bleach based solutions. Instead, opt for a more organic method, by mixing baking soda with just enough water to form a thick paste. Apply the paste to the stain and lay a wet paper towel over it to keep it moist. Leave for around 10 – 15 minutes and then wipe clean. Vinegar is also good for sticky residues.

Be sensible with sunlight

While the sun streaming in from your kitchen window may look picture perfect, those UV rays can have harmful effects on your surfaces. Stone and laminate finish worktops, and laminate wall panels, can sometimes fade if exposed to regular sunlight, especially noticeable in darker colours. However, the good news is this kind of fading will only start after several months or even years of full sun exposure, so you’re probably safe enough in the UK! Plus, at Rearo all our products come with a 10 year guarantee as standard - check with our Sales team at time of purchase for full details on the manufacturer’s warranty.

However, it's tough to find any substance or surface that will last forever when UV rays are a regular factor. So it’s always wise to avoid direct sunshine on any product – even just place a table cloth or tea towel over sunlight areas to reduce exposure.

Remember too - always wipe spillages of liquids right away. These will attract the sun while being absorbed. It can also flood the laminate, especially near seams, as water can penetrate and cause the substrate to swell.

So, follow these simple tricks to keep your home happy while you have fun in the sun – enjoy!
